Rocky Mountain High

Monday we broke camp in Golden, CO at 8:30am and headed right into the Rocky Mountains.  The terrain was beautiful and we saw a young Big Horn Sheep. Melissa was a nervous wreck on the 6% downgrade for 4 miles at 45mph and burning rear brakes. Our highest point was 11,900 ft elevation. We made it across the mountains by 12:30pm and stopped for lunch in the foothills outside of Vail, Co.

Another 5.5 hours of driving across the desert and we landed at Arches National Park at 5:30pm.   It was a very long day of driving for David.  We had one hour in the visitor center before it closed and then we took the driving tour through the park.  As we started our tour it began to rain. It was breathtaking.  The thunder echoed off the fins, spires and arches.  Rain clouds and sunlight alternated across the landscape bathing certain features in light and then shadow.

We were in the park for about an hour and a half, stopping at a few of the famous features to walk around them for a closer look.  Ellie took the most pictures with her new camera.  Her favorite moment was when we were walking the path around Balanced Rock and she thought she saw a snake – it was just a long piece of wood.  But the “sighting” scared the heck out of Rachel who was on the nervous look out for snakes after watching the movie in the visitor center.  Other than a chipmunk, we did not see any wildlife.   David’s favorite thing was seeing a small river in the dessert after the rain came through.  He even took video of it.

Made it to our campground in Moab, UT at 8:30pm and quickly grilled some hamburgers for dinner as we were all starving.
